本册教材是"国际合作综合英语教学实验系列用书"第四册的下册（4B），适合实验班四年级下学期使用。数年实验使我们深深感受到，正确的贯彻实验理念是保证实验成功的关键。四年级是实验的另一重要转折点，不仅英语的听说形式发生重大变化，必须通过强调读写和转变其形式来达到符合这一年龄阶段学生的认知发展要求，而且主题活动教学也开始呈现出新的特点。此书是我们在编写本书过程中深入各实验学校，结合实验教师的教学实践进行多种形式的探讨，吸收综合英语教学实验开展以来各校取得的积极成果，数易其稿而成。 本册的编写非常重视从各方面体现实验理念，并充分考虑四年级的实际情况，如重视把更高层次的知识与培养学生语言能力结合起来；不过于偏重背记词汇，但也注意通过创编相关的活动和展示灵活的构词知识，扩大学生的词汇量；关注到这一阶段学生能够在相关的情境下，比较自由地表达自己的思想的能力而强调加大更有科学性的情境性教学，更快地发展学生的语言能力；基于这种主动性的发展，本册更不强调机械的语法操练，而是注重轻松愉悦、生动活泼的语言习得过程；不简单地片面追求一节课的所谓完整性，而是更强调贴近学生生活和兴趣需要，最大限度地调动学生的学习积极性。4B作为高年级的教材和低年级的教材很不同，单元的编写更加突出了对相关知识的扩展。本册较好地体现了综合英语的理念和特点。学生通过学习相关的主题单元，既习得了英语，也学会了知识。
