本册教材是"国际合作综合英语教学实验系列用书"第五册的上册（5A），适合实验班五年级上学期。在过去数年实验中，我们日益感受到系统地编制一套能充分体现本实验理念的教材至关重要。本册用书正是我们根据六年来的实验成果及多次实验教材编写经历，历经一年的时间，数易其稿而成。 作为“综合英语教学实验”的专门用书，本册秉承前面四册要求，重视贯彻实验宗旨，突出培养学生语言能力。在重视小学高年级儿童发展规律基础上，创编相关活动，通过把四年来所学的语言和知识的整合贯通，使学生能在相关情境中，有创意地自由表达思想和进行较高水平的思考活动；本册不主张机械的语法操练，而是在强调富有哲理的生动教学中习得语言的同时，把相应的语法学习结合起来。本册教材一如既往地强调全英教学，根据五年级学生发展需要设定相应的内容难度，以确保实验目标的实现，这是其他教材代替不了的。5A作为小学高年级教材在内容上具有广泛性，难度上具有适当性，使学生在扩大知识面的同时学到地道的英语。根据我们的设计，学生学完本册（5A）后，学生的词汇量将达到3000以上，能够听懂并用英语谈论生活中的各种现象，并且能够进行中西文化的对比，在语言能力和跨文化交际能力方面都有所发展，为达到类母语式英语水平奠定坚实基础。
